In fairness to McCain, he's simply saying that a private ceremony without legal recognition is cool. So, get married to affirm your love or whatever, but don't expect tax benefits or the marriage to be legally recognized. It's a position I've heard before. I don't really care about it. If gay men and women want to be legally bound to one another and deal with the messy split that will come about half the time more power to them.
